Flagship Whale Watching Excursions

On February 29, 2016, my friend and I took a whale watching cruise through Flagship Cruises and Events.  We had initially planned the day for February 15th but the tour was cancelled due to extremely high surf. The manager also gave us two complimentary tickets for the rescheduled date. If you have an Entertainment.com coupon book, there is also a great coupon inside for the Flagship events.

Flagship is located at 990 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA, 92101. They are open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Saturday. Whale watching season is from mid-December through April 17 for 2016. There is a choice of tours and boats for whale watching. There is the choice of a 1400 power high speed jet boat. This tour is offered Saturday and Sunday. It costs more than the normal whale watching boat tour. It is $55 for one adult, $45 for children (ages 4-12), and $50 for seniors and military.

My friend and I chose the regular boat tour. It is approximately 3 hours long. Flagship has one very special thing going for them and that is a 6 year partnership with Birch Aquarium. This means that every whale watching tour has a Birch Aquarium naturalist aboard to narrate the tour and give interesting facts about the local sights, wildlife, and of course, the whales.

The regular boat tours are offered 7 days per week. The weekday costs are $40/adult, $20/child (4-12), younger children are free, and $35 for senior/military. The weekend regular boat tours cost $435/adult, $23/child, and $40/senior/military. The tours depart at 9:30 and 1:30 for the regular whale watching boat.

If you are prone to seasickness, you should speak with your doctor or if able to, take a Dramamine pill 40 minutes prior to departure. There are parts of the cruise where the boat is really rocking.

Also good advice from the staff, if you feel sick, do not go to the restrooms on the lower deck. That is where you will feel the boat rocking the most. They recommend you look at the horizon to give yourself a steady image to stare at, take deep breaths, and stay on the deck in the fresh air. (They do provide sea sickness bags). There is also a small snack shop on the first level and they also sell Dramamine, but by the time you decide you want it, it may be too late.

We took the morning tour on a Monday so it was wonderful to have a very small group on the boat. One thing I did not care for was they have someone standing at the gate to take your picture as you enter the waiting area. I know they do this at many places now and all you have to say is you do not want your picture taken. I said this but they told my friend and I that it was for identification purposes. What a crock. And of course, at the end of the tour, we stepped off the boat to see this:

OK, the negative is now out of the way. While we waited for them to open the area to board, we were able to look down into the water and we saw a number of baby rays. They were so cute and amazing, but too quick for me and my camera.

The day we went on the tour was extremely overcast, which you will see by the pictures. The staff were extremely friendly and as we boarded the boat, they greeted us warmly. We left the dock right on time and were underway. (It gets cold out there so remember a sweatshirt or jacket.)

Also, no matter how overcast it is, sunscreen is a great idea. Instead of just silently making our way out to the open sea, the Birch Aquarium naturalist narrated many of the sights we were seeing on our way out of the harbor. She imparted many interesting facts about some of the buildings along the way, as well as facts about Point Loma and the lighthouse there. We passed the Midway, the US Navy Air Base, and many other areas. If you keep your eyes open, you can spot many sea birds in different areas; like the snowy egret and cormorants.

With the fog, the other ships looked like ghost ships. We passed a number of naval vessels and were lucky enough to see a submarine out on the ocean. I had never seen one actually moving except in the movies.

There were tugboats helping an refill tanker, dredging equipment, the Cabrillo National Monument, and an assortment of other sights to take in on the way out to the open sea.

Another good thing on the Flagship whale watching tours is that Birch also has several Birch volunteers on board to help spot whales, answer questions, and to bring around interactive items that are great for the kids. On the way back to the San Diego harbor area, the volunteers brought out items that interested the kids as well as the adults. I was fascinated being able to touch the baleen and see how it actually works and I was fascinated by the whale lice and the symbiotic relationship their have with the grey whales.

I personally am happy seeing any animals on the water and there were plenty of sea lions resting on the buoys on the way to and the way back from the open sea.

Now, of course anyone on a whale watching tour wants to see whales. And the whale watching tour advertisements always show the whales breaching. We were looking for grey whales and on a very overcast day, they are not easy to spot. Try not to get your hopes up, especially your kids' hopes about what they will see. Just enjoy the entire experience. We saw three grey whales, but what I mean by that is, we saw mostly small slivers of their backs, a fluke, and the spray from their blow holes. They move so quickly, so it is difficult to get pictures and I would recommend you keep your camera on a burst setting once the whales are spotted. This was what we saw.

Now, this is not a bad thing. We DID see whales. They are beautiful and majestic. The narrative gave us so many facts about their migration behaviors, breeding, and their behaviors that we were witnessing. Also, being on a tour with so few people, made it easy for everyone to be able to see. (We have been on crowded tours and people push and shove and by the time you get a place on the side of the boat, the whale is gone). Everyone was very nice and the volunteers were amazing at pointing out the whales and where they may surface next.

So my dream of an entire pod of whales breaching at the same time in slow motion while I took lots of pictures did not materialize. But it was nice to have a day out on the water and it is always nice to learn new things. So, we headed back to the harbor area. On the way back, we saw more sea lions and a replica of the America's Cup. Another cool thing that kids and adults seemed to enjoy watching was the wake left by our boat. It made the most beautiful blue as we left the open sea.

All in all, a great day. They post the whale count on their website and there are days where they have seen numerous whales, dolphins, and sea lions. I would think the viewing would be best near the beginning of the season but you never know. This is a great ride for children as the staff does their best to keep them engaged and there is a lot to see both ways to and from the

Wind Therapy
It does a body and soul good

by Stacey Kuhns

The Motorcycle Allows Easy Freedom

For the past year and a half, my boyfriend and I have been riding all over San Diego on his motorcycle. (He wants me to try riding one myself, but that is not going to happen). I love getting out, breathing the fresh air, and seeing places I have never seen in San Diego.

I have gotten good at riding and taking pictures which gives me great pleasure. The motorcycle allows us to pull off the side of smaller roads to stop and see things, allows us easy parking most of the time wherever we go, and is just a great way to see the countryside.

We have done coastal rides, desert rides, mountain rides, and places in between. San Diego offers all of that. One of my favorite places to stop is off the Sunrise Highway at the Pacific Crest Trail as well as the overlooks all down the highway. Where else can you be standing in a forest yet looking at the desert in the distance?

I have to mention that I am disabled. Long rides are difficult for me but I would not give this up for anything. I have seen more places in the last year and a half than I have seen in the past 20 years prior to riding. If I see a herd of deer or a hawk or something that interests me, my boyfriend just pulls off the road so I can watch and take pictures. It allows for a great deal of freedom.

There is a street on one of the Indian reservations that we ride on and one portion of the road is my favorite. Not for the sights, but for the smell. It smells like plumeria and it is divine. Being out riding and smelling that puts a smile on my face.

I learned the hard way not to put my foot on the hot metal while riding. Of course this happened in Anza Borrego where there was only one place to buy shoes.

At one of my favorite places, rain, shine or snow, the Pacific Crest Trail off Sunrise Highway, which overlooks the desert.

We also ride to the beach a lot, on the spur of the moment, to relax and catch a sunset.

This past weekend, we rode through Pala, Pauma, and La Jolla Indian Reservations, stopping at the Wilderness Gardens Preserve on the way to Pauma. Just a quiet relaxing place to hike and unwind. There are about three short hiking trails and in the winter, there is a large stream that runs through the area. They have lots of amazing plants and I found the dried moss patterns on the rocks fascinating. (It costs $3 to park here and you need exact change). Inside the preserve, all rocks, plants and animals are protected, so not collecting of any items.

Last year we rode the bike up to Idyllwild and discovered some very cool places on the way. The bike allows the easy freedom to just stop and explore things that interest us.

We also belong to a motorcycle riding club. A great, fun, family oriented group of people and we have done some great rides with them. (Vuclan Riders of San Diego, Chapter 1-24).

We have also ridden up the coast to Long Beach and stopped whenever we felt like seeing something. Some beautiful sights that many folks don't take the time to really see.

We have ridden the motorcycle to Balboa Park and downtown San Diego and to Padres games. Makes parking very easy in those busy areas. We have headed up Palomar Mountain several times. Always a beautiful ride.

Lake Henshaw after coming down from Palomar

Seriously, San Diego County amazes me with all the hidden sights that people don't always take the time to see. We even stopped by Lake Henshaw one time because across the street from the lake is the Himalaya Mine, where the public are allowed to mine for tourmaline (I wrote about this place in an earlier Hidden Gems blog).

Wind therapy is something I look forward to. Especially the feeling of peace I get when we are out on the open road, discovering amazing places, people, and things. Sometimes, we hop on the bike with no plan and my boyfriend says "Let's just go get lost." Those are the best days as we never know where we will end up and what we will find. And even though some days are tough for me, getting on and off the bike with my disabilities, I wouldn't give it up because I want to LIVE!

Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill
in Hillcrest

by Stacey Kuhns

(Definitely not the fish market described in their name)

Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill in Hillcrest by Stacey Kuhns
While in the Hillcrest area, my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat. My daughter recommended Fresh Catch, which has been opened less than one year. Now my daughter does not eat fish, but she had heard good things about the restaurant so we tried it.

Fresh Catch is located at 3650 5th Avenue, #103, San Diego, CA, 92013. They are open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days per week. This restaurant used to be an Italian restaurant. It is owned by the same person but he decided to go in a different direction . . . . . fish. The prices are pretty standard as far as fish restaurants go. Always a little more expensive than other types of food.

When you walk into this restaurant, it is pleasant inside. The staff is friendly. Our waitress, Ashley, was very good and attentive. There is a small fish counter with a fair variety of fish, but is almost set up as a display more than a place you would go to purchase fish. Some of the fish had visible prices and some did not, so there was inconsistency in the display which I did not care for. The fish prices there were expensive and ahi was over $21 a pound! (If you want a real fish market, I would suggest something more along the lines of Point Loma Seafoods.

We decided to start with cups of New England clam chowder, which was good. They also offer a Fisherman's Stew and Ashley brought us a small cup of it to try. My boyfriend liked it but I did not care for it. (You can also get either of these selections in a hot buttered bread bowl).

We also started with the appetizer plate of shashimi. Now, I love shashimi and this was no exception. The fish was delicious, but...I could tell this was a plate that had been in the refrigerator all day.

I asked Ashley if it was made fresh and she said it was made fresh that morning. The reason I knew it had been already on the plate and in the fridge was there was a green "salad" of sorts on top of the middle of the fish. (The fish were fanned out in a circle and the salad was in the middle). Where the salad had sat on the fish all morning, the fish were stained green. Definitely did not like that and wondered why they do not just make it fresh to order. I later noticed one of the same shashimi plates in the display case, with the salad on it and covered with saran.

I found the menu lacking in descriptions. I like to know exactly what I am ordering. We then tried the fried calamari and while it was good, we agreed it was definitely not the best we had eaten.

For our last dish, we ordered the Shrimp Mac n Cheese. Someone else took our order and when he brought it out, it was the Crab Mac n Cheese. My boyfriend and I had taken one bite each of this and the waiter came out, took it away then eventually brought out the shrimp mac n cheese. I found the crab mac to be extremely fishy tasting. The shrimp mac was very good. The crab mac was kind of runny but the shrimp mac was cheesier.

The Fresh Catch also offers clams, mussels, seafood plates, and salads. Their sandwiches sounded good. They offer a lobster roll, spicy fried snapper, fried oyster sandwich and a yellow tail BLT.

Overall, we found the restaurant just okay. I would not return for a second visit. I would probably just head over to Point Loma Seafoods.
