Witnessing Inspiration - Savannah

Below is a Facebook Post by STOP the HATE:

Oma has had the privileged of knowing this young lady and her mothers her entire life.  Go Savannah Banana.  With the Olympics in the news these days, I wanted to take time to recognize this young lady who has earned her gold and the hearts of those around her. It should be noted that Savannah's moms work with her every day to improve her quality of life - great job to all three!

Witnessing Inspiration - Savannah

This week there have been many that I would say are very deserving of the title. However, the one that I would like to recognize is one that I have the great pleasure of calling a close friend. She hides in California, but is always in the hearts of everyone around her both far and near. Today's inspiration is Savannah and her moms Nancy and Jan Candelaria. I am very pleased every time I hear of the great things that this young lady does. She and her moms have been showing over and over again that they are able to overcome all odds.

Savannah faces challenges that many of us would never even begin to imagine, but she does not let that stop her. One way that her moms have found to help her overcome was through gymnastics. Her gymnastics has excelled over a short time. She is amazing, and you can see her passion in everything that she does.

She does not just overcome her own obstacles. She also does what she can to help others overcome theirs. She recently was part of the idea behind a lending library for people that read the Rupert's Tales books. She felt that no one should have to go without reading, just because they can not afford the book. So, her book that she earned from a writing contest, was the first to be donated to the cause.

She continues to stun the world around her, because she has been through doctors and therapy that would give the answer of "Sorry, but she will not be able to ....." Yet, this young lady continues to prove them wrong. Tell Savannah she can not do something amazing, and she will prove you wrong without a second thought.

While she is a young lady that may have a few obstacles lining her path, she will not just beat those obstacles, but she will do so in a way that is sure to continue to inspire the world around her.

The picture of Savannah holding her award was the award she received from qualifying to go to the state championships. The portrait was taken, when she was the youngest in her level 3 to become state champion in Trampoline and Tumbling last year.

Witnessing Inspiration - Savannah

The last picture is her with the coach, George Hery, who is a nationally famous coach. He was the first medalist in tramp and tumbling in the 60's when the sport was first allowed into the Olympics. He is the father of the modern competition trampoline. He recognized the need for many autistic kids to move constantly and created routines that are now internationally standards.

San Diego Kayaking for Health and Fun

You can kayak virtually any place along the San Diego coastline. Kayaking involves paddling a small craft through water. It is a low-impact activity that can improve your aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. More importantly, kayaking can be done as a hobby, a competitive sport or as a fun activity.

Have fun while you:
  • • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • • Increased muscle strength, particularly in the back, arms, shoulders and chest, from moving the paddle
  • • Increased torso and leg strength, as the strength to power a canoe or kayak comes mainly from rotating the torso and applying pressure with your legs
  • • Reduced risk of wear-and-tear on joints and tissues, since paddling is a low impact activity.

Below are photos of a friend and her family enjoying their day with the healthy activity of Kayaking at Crown Point North Park in Mission Bay.

Uninvited Bugs Do Cause Accidents

Can you believe that there are actually statistics regarding the percentage of car accidents blamed on uninvited bugs and insects!?!

Uninvited Bugs Do Cause Accidents

In 2006, it was reported that over half a million motorists* have had a car accident thanks to distractions caused by insects and bugs, totaling an estimated £44 million of car damage each year – Wow.

Luckily my friend, who posted the story below, was able to survive her bug encounter unscathed.

Post by Joanna T.

So this weird thing happened on Sunday ...I was driving down to Bonita to meet up with some junior high school pals. When I take a long drive, I tend to bring my left foot up on the seat and sit half cross legged. I had a T shirt type dress on and had slipped off my flip flops. Sitting like that in a dress creates kind of a tent. Anyways, I'm cruising about 70 down the freeway and I hear a really loud buzzing, I mean really loud. I glanced down and saw there was a fruit beetle on the driver’s side floorboard. (If you don't know fruit beetles- they are really large bugs, sort of metallic green looking, real hard shell, and make a LOUD buzzing sound, they are harmless but actually kind of scary when they run into you because their shell is so hard).

The beetle zooms up to the seat and goes under my dress and is buzzing around knocking into my thighs! I freaked out... Not a good thing when you're traveling at high speed is a box shaped car on the freeway. It was an involuntary panicky screamy type of freak out, my car was swerving all over the place as I was jumping around and swatting at the beetle.

People in the next lanes were honking at me, and I actually banged my head on the side window during my fit. I finally knocked it out from under my dress and onto the floorboard, slipped my flip flop back on and slammed my foot down on the bug. I thought that was it, and kept my foot firmly planted for several minutes.

Once I regained control of my car and of myself, I laughed out loud to myself and though wow I almost died from a fruit beetle! I probably should have pulled over and thrown the bug out of the car, but I thought it was squished under my flip flop. Once I calmed down, I put my foot back up in the seat and continued on my way. I left the flip flop on top of the bug.

About 15 minutes later I glance down and see it slowly crawling out from under the front of the flip flop. Panicked again, but less swerving because at least it wasn't under my dress touching my skin! So I slammed my foot back down on the flip flop and trapped the bug under there again. Man those things are really hard shelled and hard to kill!

So I rode the rest of the way to Bonita with my foot pressing down as hard as possible. I don't know why I didn't just pull off the freeway and take care of it for sure, I just didn't. When I got to my friend’s house I couldn't find the beetle in my car, i was telling my friends what had happened and the little fucker flew out of my car and was buzzing my head! They started jumping around too and it finally flew away. I know this sounds like a made up story, but it's not!

My friends can attest to the beetle buzzing me in my her driveway. Maybe my blue dress attracted it, I don't know. It was just a crazy afternoon and I think that beetle was out to get me. We both lived through it, but I'm gonna steer clear of fruit beetles from now on.

Stay Safe Out There!

Quality Wood Keepsake Cremation Box #qualitywoodurns

Quality Wood Keepsake Cremation Box #qualitywoodurns
This light brown decorative wood urn really is unique and pretty. However, I ordered the small one and it was a tad too small to serve as an urn. Also the slide bottom is very loose and flies open when I pick up the box. If you were to use this as a cremation box, you would have to glue it shut.

However, Oma plans on using this hand carved container to store her favorite knickknacks. I love how this distinctive engraved vessel looks displayed on my night stand.

It’s Election Time, And I’m Confused

Below is an amazing simple to understand explanation of what is occurring in my beloved America.  It was written by my Auntie, Marlene K. Smith. She proudly served as the Cumberland Town Council president in the 1980s.

It’s election time, and I’m confused. Many of us remember I Love Lucy’s “Vitameatavegamin” salesgirl. I think I’m a “conserva-popu-liber-xeno-nation-global” girl.

I believe in capitalism and I believe in welfare but I don’t believe families should be on welfare for generations or women have multiple pregnancies at taxpayers’ expense. I’m a fairly regular churchgoer, but under certain strict circumstances, I believe a woman should have the right to decide to terminate a pregnancy.

I believe in gay marriage. Whether by birth or by choice, persons’ sexual behavior or choices are between a loving Creator and themselves….period.

I believe in fiscal responsibility. I am frightened by the enormous deficit this country continues to ignore and blame on wars supported by both parties. Neither party seems to have done much to stop the deficit clock from ticking.

I believe in legal immigration. I believe illegal immigration should be treated for what it is: a deliberate attempt to “cut the line.” Call it whatever you wish, blame whomever you wish and rationalize it however you may, it remains wrong.

I love my country, but realize we have made many errors particularly in our treatment of Native Americans and Asian and African Americans. But I know that other countries, with the exception of Alexander the Great, seldom did any better in their treatment of minorities.

I fear radical Islam which is inconsistent with the ideas of a modern democracy, but so is extremism in Christian or Judeo religions. Extremist religious views do not represent a majority of believers nor the highest ideals of any religion.

I have no faith in the elite and powerful of either major political party.

I refrain from discussing politics to avoid ridicule or confrontation. I liked Dr. Ben Carson, a black man, whom I found thoughtful and sincere. I liked Sen. Marco Rubio, an Hispanic man, because of his strong stand on national security.

I proudly support our law enforcement and military personnel. I have cringed at the outright hostility from many present leaders towards them, especially the President who seems now, after tacitly encouraging lack of respect towards both, has finally decided to attempt to become more even-handed. Too little too late, Mr. President.

I support unions and was a member of a teachers’ union, but not always happy with its leadership, nor were they with me.

I believe women should be able to drive, vote, marry, divorce, study and carry guns. But Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren, Susan Rice, or Debbie Schultz do nothing to stir my feminine pride. Why? Because I believe in reading bills before they are passed, I would never help a leader “save face” by lying, and even though I am Arab-American, I support Israel as an important ally.

I have no faith in Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s vision for our country. So I will vote for Mr. Trump despite his many flaws.

Belching Beaver Brewery Tavern & Grill

by Stacey Kuhns

On Friday night, my boyfriend and I met some friends at the Belching Beaver, in the revitalized downtown Vista area. They also have a brewery in Vista (980 Park Center Drive).

This is more of a restaurant and bar setting with indoor and outdoor seating. Belching Beaver is located in the old First National Bank building on the corner of Broadway and Indiana. Their official address is 302 East Broadway. There is no sign to distinguish the place but their truck is normally parked in the small parking lot (come early to find parking downtown). They are open 3pm-9pm Mon-Wed, 3pm-10pm Thurs-Fri, 1pm-10pm Sat, and 1pm-9pm Sun. (They are located directly across the street from The Yellow Deli).

There are three areas to enjoy at this establishment. A large indoor seating area, a dining patio, and to the right of the building, a backyard area that has lots of sand, benches and chairs, fire pits, game areas, and serves finger foods and more bar type foods. The front outside dining area and inside serve more interesting and pricier choices made by their onsite chef. They also have a nightly chef's special. Both outdoor areas are dog friendly.

It was very hot outside so at first, we were the only ones on the patio. They have umbrellas, but as the sun went down, there was no escaping the sun in our eyes. One of the workers informed us they are getting sailcloth to block the sun so that will be a welcome addition. The staff are all nice and attentive, but service can get a bit slower as the place fills with people.

Our waitress, Jessica, was amazing. Very friendly and so knowledgeable about the beers, wines, and food. You could tell she enjoys her job. There is an extensive beer menu. My boyfriend tried 8 small (5 ounce) beers ($2 each). You can pick any beers you want to try, any amount, for the $2 each. I had a glass of wine as I do not like beer. (They also have an extensive wine list). Our friends also tried a variety of beers. My boyfriend's favorite (and also some of our friends' favorites) were the Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout Nitro (everyone loved this), the Mango beer, the Raspberry beer (cannot remember the name of it), and the Hofbrau Hefeweizen. They tried a number of other beers, but these were the favorites.

The next three pictures are from the Belching Beaver website as I was unable to take pictures inside and outside in the sand area due to the crowds.

We stayed at the Belching Beaver for four hours. In that time, we had a chance to order a number of appetizers and split them. The food is delicious and unique. Many of the items were made with beer so I steered clear of those, but my boyfriend and friends tried some of them.

My boyfriend tried the Andouille Corn Dogs, which he loved. They are made with a Southern style Andouille sausage dipped in their Hop Highway 78 IPA corn meal batter and served with a honey mustard sauce made with the Me So Honey beer.

We split the Dueling "Pokes", two types of ahi poke, one with a smoked poke sauce and one with a mango/tropical sauce. So good!

My boyfriend later tried the Fire Grilled Shrimp Skewers which have a citrus soy glaze and are served over local organic greens. The Belching Beaver uses a lot of locally sourced organic ingredients.

I later found out you can order the bar food from the other side and enjoy it on the dining patio, so I ordered a small Caesar Salad. It was one of the best I had ever had (but I forgot to take a picture of it). We also split the Tri City (three different sliders). One is a house-made poke Brat patty with a stoneground mustard made with the Me So Honey beer. I took one bite of this particular slider and gave the rest to my boyfriend. I did not like it at all (probably the beer taste), but he enjoyed it. The second was a chorizo slider which I liked quite a bit and he did not care for. The last was a Cubano slider that I loved.

The Belching Beaver also serves flatbreads (in which the bread itself is made with brewers yeast and Damned IPA), a number of interesting salads, burgers, seafood, steak, stuffed meatloaf, pork chops, and something called the Brontosaurus Bone ( a giant braised beef rib). My friend ordered the Fried Cauliflower and Leeks. I have to say, the fried leeks were amazing!! Could have eaten a bowl of those. A couple of the guys ordered the BBQ Short Rib Sandwich. They liked the meat but felt the bread was soggy and greasy.

For two of us, between the beer, wine, and food, the bill came to almost $100. The food from the other side (sand area) is quite a bit less expensive, but you have to ask to see that menu if you are not sitting in the sand outdoor area. (More fries, burgers, wings, finger food items).

All in all, it was a pleasant experience and we would definitely go there again. A great place to meet friends, talk, try new things, and relax.
