Happy 127th Birthday to the Hotel Del Coronado

Happy 127th Birthday to the Hotel Del Coronado

The Hotel del Coronado, located across San Diego Bay on the Coronado peninsula, first opened for business in 1888. Today, ninety-five years later, it remains one of the most celebrated Victorian seaside resorts in the world. When plans for the structure were initially proposed by two midwestern businessmen, Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, they promised "the largest hotel in the world . . . too gorgeous to be true."  These first owners would undoubtedly be pleased to see how impeccably the Hotel del Coronado's present owners have maintained this architectural gem.

Oma and Opa love to spend their 'day at the del.'  There is so much to see, do and taste!  You can enjoy S'mores on the Beach; relax by the sunny poolside or in the hot tub; rent a bicycle; and explore all seventeen unique shops under one roof! Oma's favorite activity is a visit to ENO Pizzeria & Wine Bar. ENO is an artisan pizzeria and wine bar in an energetic setting reminiscent of a neighborhood wine bar. You can book a reservation online!

Fun Fact:  Actresses Lucille Ball and Esther Williamswere guests at The Del, enamored by the unique charm and relaxing oceanfront setting. Lucille Ball along with Desi Arnaz retreated to The Del for a lengthy stay in 1950 to fine-tune their “Ricky and Lucy” personas (which television executives had originally dismissed). And, Esther Williams who visited the resort in 1958, enjoyed her stay so much that she returned again in 1988 to reenact the scene with sons Benjamin and Kimball.
