Reef Indy Roams Oscar Rose Park

On his first cross-states skate trip, Reef Indy roams the Oscar Rose Park. This skatepark in Abilene, TX was built in 2001 by a local contractor.

The Oscar Rose Park consist of a street area and a connected flow bowl. The park allows both skaters and bikes, and is lit up at night. Definitely a fun park if you are in the area.

It was rougher than OB. Made it super slow, Dad commented via Facebook.  Still fun tho.

A Day at Lively Skate Park

Reef Indy was able to try out his new bike this morning.  Uncle Moses and Auntie Sitara bought him a Specialized Hotwalk by Pedro.  Specialized is biggest bike name in the balance bike industry. Staying true to their high standards, the Hotwalk is built as tough as their mountain bikes and will last your family for generations. While built tough, the bike only has a two-inch adjustment on the seat post and does not have a brake. To aid in tricks and coasting, the Hotwalk also has an integrated footrest at the base of the seat post.

Kurupt Skate Shop is kind of hard to find because it is inside the FootGear store.  Dad purchased his Texas board.  He also got Uncle Moses a long board.

The gang visited the 2012 Best Skate Park in Dallas - Lively Skate Park.  local skateboarders got a 20,000-square-foot gift: a free, well-lit, professionally designed skate park, one with the very first cradle in Texas. It came courtesy of the city of Irving and SITE Design Group, a company that makes "action sports" parks all over the world. Lively Pointe has since become a center for skateboarders and BMXers of all ages, with all the curbs, verts, hubbas and ledges their grinding, kick-flipping little hearts could possibly desire.

We enjoyed our dinner at Torchy's Taco.  Though it took three tries to get Opa's order correct; the manager Ken was very nice about it and the food was very yummy.

Ian Tilmann Foundation
Just Promise To Wear A Helmet

The Ian Tilman Foundation

Our core mission is brain injury prevention. We accomplish this mission by distributing safety helmets and educational materials throughout our local community. The Foundation educates young people and their families about the dangers and consequences of failing to wear safety gear, particularly helmets. The Foundation promotes safety and brain injury prevention to youngsters and adults engaged in any skating or cycling sport (skateboards, in-line skating, bicycling, and foot powered scooters). Our approach is simple and direct. If you pledge to wear a helmet when skating, the Foundation will give you one…FREE!

The Smith and Freund Skaters Wearing Their Brain Buckets
The Smith and Freund Skaters
Wearing Their Brain Buckets
Ian Tilmann loved skateboarding and spent many hours enjoying the sport. He loved feeling the wind surrounding him as he sped downhill carving each and every curve of the road beneath him. He was fearless with a strong belief in enjoying life to its fullest. He was a street surfer...his passion was long-boarding.

On the evening of May 16, 2005, Ian and several friends were skateboarding down Hercules Ave. in Clearwater, FL on a hill known locally as Cemetery Hill. As he was making his last run down the hill that evening his skateboard suddenly stopped and he was thrown headfirst onto the pavement.

Ian was NOT wearing a safety helmet and as a result he suffered severe traumatic brain injuries. Ian never regained consciousness and died 10 days later on May 26, 2005. This beloved son was 28 years old.

When people hear Ian's story many ask with shock and disbelief "he died from falling off a skateboard"?  His parents believe their son's death could have been prevented by simply choosing to wear a helmet.

Ian Tilmann had a passion for humanity and helping others. His family and friends understood this passion and his "pay it forward" attitude. It is their  hope that through their tragic loss they can pass on Ian's passion for humanity by saving other families the pain that we have endured.

Hot Fun at the Pala Skatepark

Oma and Opa spent some time with Reef Indy at the Pala Skatepark.  Poor Reef was not feeling 100%; so he took a nap on his Opa.  It was a super hot day - in the upper 90's

Poor Reef was not feeling 100%; so he took a nap on his Opa.

Oma thought she had better practice her videography skills before grandson Reef Indy hits the bowls. Since opening in April 2008, the Pala Skatepark has been providing skateboarders with a safe, fun place to skateboard. The park was designed by award-winning skatepark designer Wally Hollyday and features rails, drops, ramps as well as a carved out bowl modeled after an abandoned pool that was a favorite of local skateboarders in the 80s and 90s.

The video above was taken before 2014 Pala Skatepark Death Race presented by Gullwing Trucks.
