Off the Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, . . .
Book Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

For as long as Oma can remember, history and non-fiction books have been a passion. It has been said that he who controls the past controls the future. We are the sum of all our bygone events--good, bad, and indifferent!

“Off the Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook, and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed the Boundaries of the Known World” is from the #1 bestselling author of History's Greatest Generals comes an exciting new paperback book on the greatest explorers in history and how their discoveries shaped the modern world, Michael Rank.

Whether it is Rabban Bar Sauma, the 13th-century Chinese monk commissioned by the Mongols to travel to Europe and form a military alliance against the Islamic Caliphate; Marco Polo, who opened a window to the East for the West; or Captain James Cook, whose maritime voyages of discovery created the global economy of the 21st century, each of these explorers had an indelible impact on the modern world.

This book will look at the 11 greatest explorers in history. Some travelled for religious piety, such as Ibn Battuta, who travelled from North Africa to China in the 1300s, visiting every Islamic pilgrimage site between. Others travelled for profit, such as Ferdinand Magellan, who wanted to consolidate Spain's holdings on the spice trade. Still others travelled for discovery, such as Ernest Shackleton, who led two dozen men to the bottom of the world in an attempt to cross Antarctica on foot.

Whatever their reason for discovery, these explorers still inspire us today to push the limits of human achievement -- and discover something about ourselves in the process.

Oma found "Off the Edge of the Map: Marco Polo, Captain Cook, and 9 Other Travelers and Explorers That Pushed the Boundaries of the Known World" a very easy book to read which riveted the reader’s attention.

Chapter 11, about Neil Armstrong, was Oma’s favorite chapter for several reasons. However, the most important one was the fact this this was a piece of history personally witnessed. Armstrong, an American Astronaut, was the first person to walk on the Moon. Oma can still remember the excitement of the accomplishment.

If you love the adventure of history, this collection by Michael Rank is well worth your reading time.

Oma's Workout with Reef

Yesterday Oma was lucky enough to have Reef Indy for an hour while mom ran a quick errand. Unfortunately Reef was tired and cranky. Also this was an unexpected visit and Oma had not worked-out on the treadmill yet.

MapMyWalk is a fitness tracking application that enables you to use the built-in GPS of your mobile device to track all of your fitness activities.
The perfect solution cumulated. Oma activated her “MapMyWalk” app on her iPhone and put the fussy baby in the stroller. (MapMyWalk is a fitness tracking application that enables you to use the built-in GPS of your mobile device to track all of your fitness activities & it is free!)

Then Oma briskly walked laps around her driveway. Reef quieted right down as the motion soothed him. By the half mile marker, he was fast asleep.

Oma was able to mollify Reef and get a mile walk in all at the same time! Further, it was great to do the workout in the fresh air of sunny Southern California. More importantly, Reef settled in for a morning nap without protest.

Oma will remember this trick for further Reef visits!

DAYBOX Extra-Large Weekly Pill Box
Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Oma was pleased to be offered the opportunity to receive and review several products made by Sabi. This is review four of four.

Sabi is a Japanese noun describing “cultural aesthetic inspired by the notion that life's imperfections are what make it beautiful”

The DAYBOX pill box is Sabi's largest pill box, a weekly pill organizer for medication management featuring eight pill boxes, each inscribed with the day of the week (plus one extra!); and each with three extra-spacious pill box compartments, suitable for storing a large number of large-sized pills, vitamins and supplements.

The eight individual daily pill boxes clip together to form a beautiful weekly pill box and easily detach so you can tote with you one daily pill box at a time.

Oma is impressed with the thought and planning that went into the design of the DAYBOX pill box.  However, Oma is currently not taking any medication nor vitamins, she has no need for this medication management system.  However, it would come in handy for anyone on a medicine regiment.

Product Features:

  • Capacity: 27 capsules per day. Fish oil fits!
  • Weight: 368 g/13 oz
  • Dimensions: H: 280 mm x W: 105 mm x D: 35 mm/H: 11 in x W: 4.1 in x D: 1.4 in

Oma loves the design of this product and its uniqueness.  The pill box cap is easy to open and does not strain the hands and wrists.  Oma's favorite feature is that the Shake comes with a little cork to insert into the top hole if you want to take Shake with you on-the-go. This cork ensures that pills won't spill into the lid during rough travel.

CHOP Minimal Effort Pill Cutter
Review.

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Oma was pleased to be offered the opportunity to receive and review several products made by Sabi. This is review two of four.

Sabi is a Japanese noun describing “cultural aesthetic inspired by the notion that life's imperfections are what make it beautiful”

Different people split pills for different reasons: some pills, especially daily vitamin supplements, are so large that they can be difficult to swallow whole. Oftentimes, pills come in only one high dosage version and you need to halve or quarter them to get a lower dose. Others split pills because it’s more cost effective, since higher-dosage pills frequently cost the same as lower-dosage ones.

This product came just in time for us.  Opa has a supply of pills and his dosage was recently cut in half. It seems so wasteful to toss the pills with the higher dosage.  Again this Sabi product was well made, sturdy and worked really well.  It really did require just "Minimal Effort!" Oma loves the fact that the Pill Cutter is adjustable to accomodate all pill types

Product Features:

  • Weight: 34 g/1.2 oz
  • Dimensions: H: 50 mm x W: 55 mm x D: 38 mm/H: 2 in x W: 2.2 in x D: 2.2 in
  • Ultra-safe and effective, durable plastic poly (PCTA) blade
  • Pill splitter's specialized inset rubber impressions stabilize pills of all sizes and shapes
  • Light press pill splitter mechanism distributes weight applied to cap evenly
  • Easy on hands/wrists no matter “hardness” of pill material
  • Halves and quarters pills cleanly and precisely to ensure accurate dosage
  • Slip-preventing rubber base
  • BPA-free

This product works best with larger, oblong-shaped pills. May not quarter spherical or smaller pills accurately.
