Wind Therapy
It does a body and soul good

by Stacey Kuhns

The Motorcycle Allows Easy Freedom

For the past year and a half, my boyfriend and I have been riding all over San Diego on his motorcycle. (He wants me to try riding one myself, but that is not going to happen). I love getting out, breathing the fresh air, and seeing places I have never seen in San Diego.

I have gotten good at riding and taking pictures which gives me great pleasure. The motorcycle allows us to pull off the side of smaller roads to stop and see things, allows us easy parking most of the time wherever we go, and is just a great way to see the countryside.

We have done coastal rides, desert rides, mountain rides, and places in between. San Diego offers all of that. One of my favorite places to stop is off the Sunrise Highway at the Pacific Crest Trail as well as the overlooks all down the highway. Where else can you be standing in a forest yet looking at the desert in the distance?

I have to mention that I am disabled. Long rides are difficult for me but I would not give this up for anything. I have seen more places in the last year and a half than I have seen in the past 20 years prior to riding. If I see a herd of deer or a hawk or something that interests me, my boyfriend just pulls off the road so I can watch and take pictures. It allows for a great deal of freedom.

There is a street on one of the Indian reservations that we ride on and one portion of the road is my favorite. Not for the sights, but for the smell. It smells like plumeria and it is divine. Being out riding and smelling that puts a smile on my face.

I learned the hard way not to put my foot on the hot metal while riding. Of course this happened in Anza Borrego where there was only one place to buy shoes.

At one of my favorite places, rain, shine or snow, the Pacific Crest Trail off Sunrise Highway, which overlooks the desert.

We also ride to the beach a lot, on the spur of the moment, to relax and catch a sunset.

This past weekend, we rode through Pala, Pauma, and La Jolla Indian Reservations, stopping at the Wilderness Gardens Preserve on the way to Pauma. Just a quiet relaxing place to hike and unwind. There are about three short hiking trails and in the winter, there is a large stream that runs through the area. They have lots of amazing plants and I found the dried moss patterns on the rocks fascinating. (It costs $3 to park here and you need exact change). Inside the preserve, all rocks, plants and animals are protected, so not collecting of any items.

Last year we rode the bike up to Idyllwild and discovered some very cool places on the way. The bike allows the easy freedom to just stop and explore things that interest us.

We also belong to a motorcycle riding club. A great, fun, family oriented group of people and we have done some great rides with them. (Vuclan Riders of San Diego, Chapter 1-24).

We have also ridden up the coast to Long Beach and stopped whenever we felt like seeing something. Some beautiful sights that many folks don't take the time to really see.

We have ridden the motorcycle to Balboa Park and downtown San Diego and to Padres games. Makes parking very easy in those busy areas. We have headed up Palomar Mountain several times. Always a beautiful ride.

Seriously, San Diego County amazes me with all the hidden sights that people don't always take the time to see. We even stopped by Lake Henshaw one time because across the street from the lake is the Himalaya Mine, where the public are allowed to mine for tourmaline (I wrote about this place in an earlier Hidden Gems blog).

Wind therapy is something I look forward to. Especially the feeling of peace I get when we are out on the open road, discovering amazing places, people, and things. Sometimes, we hop on the bike with no plan and my boyfriend says "Let's just go get lost." Those are the best days as we never know where we will end up and what we will find. And even though some days are tough for me, getting on and off the bike with my disabilities, I wouldn't give it up because I want to LIVE!

Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill
in Hillcrest

by Stacey Kuhns

(Definitely not the fish market described in their name)

Fresh Catch Fish Market and Grill in Hillcrest by Stacey Kuhns
While in the Hillcrest area, my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat. My daughter recommended Fresh Catch, which has been opened less than one year. Now my daughter does not eat fish, but she had heard good things about the restaurant so we tried it.

Fresh Catch is located at 3650 5th Avenue, #103, San Diego, CA, 92013. They are open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. 7 days per week. This restaurant used to be an Italian restaurant. It is owned by the same person but he decided to go in a different direction . . . . . fish. The prices are pretty standard as far as fish restaurants go. Always a little more expensive than other types of food.

When you walk into this restaurant, it is pleasant inside. The staff is friendly. Our waitress, Ashley, was very good and attentive. There is a small fish counter with a fair variety of fish, but is almost set up as a display more than a place you would go to purchase fish. Some of the fish had visible prices and some did not, so there was inconsistency in the display which I did not care for. The fish prices there were expensive and ahi was over $21 a pound! (If you want a real fish market, I would suggest something more along the lines of Point Loma Seafoods.

We decided to start with cups of New England clam chowder, which was good. They also offer a Fisherman's Stew and Ashley brought us a small cup of it to try. My boyfriend liked it but I did not care for it. (You can also get either of these selections in a hot buttered bread bowl).

We also started with the appetizer plate of shashimi. Now, I love shashimi and this was no exception. The fish was delicious, but...I could tell this was a plate that had been in the refrigerator all day.

I asked Ashley if it was made fresh and she said it was made fresh that morning. The reason I knew it had been already on the plate and in the fridge was there was a green "salad" of sorts on top of the middle of the fish. (The fish were fanned out in a circle and the salad was in the middle). Where the salad had sat on the fish all morning, the fish were stained green. Definitely did not like that and wondered why they do not just make it fresh to order. I later noticed one of the same shashimi plates in the display case, with the salad on it and covered with saran.

I found the menu lacking in descriptions. I like to know exactly what I am ordering. We then tried the fried calamari and while it was good, we agreed it was definitely not the best we had eaten.

For our last dish, we ordered the Shrimp Mac n Cheese. Someone else took our order and when he brought it out, it was the Crab Mac n Cheese. My boyfriend and I had taken one bite each of this and the waiter came out, took it away then eventually brought out the shrimp mac n cheese. I found the crab mac to be extremely fishy tasting. The shrimp mac was very good. The crab mac was kind of runny but the shrimp mac was cheesier.

The Fresh Catch also offers clams, mussels, seafood plates, and salads. Their sandwiches sounded good. They offer a lobster roll, spicy fried snapper, fried oyster sandwich and a yellow tail BLT.

Overall, we found the restaurant just okay. I would not return for a second visit. I would probably just head over to Point Loma Seafoods.

Healthy Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
from the Smith Trees

If you buy orange juice at the store, you may lean towards the kind that advertises itself as “100 percent juice” and “not made from concentrate.” But have you ever wondered why every glass of it tastes exactly the same?

That’s because the flavor of store-bought orange juice has more to do with chemistry than nature. For industrially-produced orange juice, after the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and the oxygen is removed from them, which allows the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling!!!

It also makes the juice completely flavorless. So the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the juice.

The photos below are of the Smith Family making Orange Juice from the organic oranges picked from our own trees.  Some of the oranges are blood oranges and gives the juice a red color.  We will get our vitamin C today!

American Ginseng Capsules 500mg 60 Capsules #AmericanGinsengCapsules

Ginseng root has been used as treatments in Asia and North America for centuries. In fact, ginseng is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world. Some studies have found that ginseng may boost the immune system. There is some evidence that one particular type of American ginseng extract might decrease the number and severity of colds in adults.

I found that the easiest way to enjoy the benefits of Ginseng is to take the tablets. I have taken these capsules (two a day in the morning) for about a week with no unpleasant side effects. I have noticed an improvement in my focus and thereby my productivity at work.

I love that it is harvested and made in the USA. I plan on continuing with the Ginseng Capsules and cannot wait to realize all the benefits!!!
